The head of Taiwan’s National Security Council Wellington Koo (顧立雄) says he does not see any near-term risk of a Chinese invasion, citing China’s domestic economic problems. Koo made the comments while answering questions in the legislature on Wednesday.
Koo says that the Chinese government is currently focused on economic stability and managing external risks. Koo cited domestic issues facing China such as difficulties attracting foreign businesses, high youth unemployment, local government debt, and sluggish domestic demand.
Koo says that although U.S.-China competition will likely continue in the near term, both sides are focused on managing the risks of conflict and dealing with domestic problems. Therefore Koo says, he does not see any risk of a Chinese invasion for now.
When asked if he foresees an invasion within the next two years, Koo said that it is impossible to predict the future. However, he says that Taiwan must remain aware of compound threats such as grey zone tactics, military intimidation, economic coercion, cyberattacks, and psychological warfare. He adds that Taiwan must strengthen its national defense in order to deter an attack.
