Taiwanese Political Figure Detained Over Fraudulent Election Polls: A Potential Case of Foreign Interference
In a startling revelation, Hsu Shao-tung, the honorary chairman of the For Public Good Party in Taiwan, is currently under detention on suspicions of producing fraudulent public opinion polls ahead of the country’s presidential and legislative elections slated for January 13. This case, which is currently being investigated by the Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office in Kaohsiung, hints at a potential network of individuals allegedly involved in a scheme to manipulate public sentiment towards specific political candidates.
The Unraveling of a Network
Notable figures implicated in this alleged network include Hsu’s son, the heads of the Charity Railway Mazu group and the Kaohsiung Pastel Association, known by their surnames Lee and Wang. These individuals are suspected of receiving guidance and financial support from entities in China with the explicit intent of swaying public opinion through the creation and dissemination of fake election polls. These counterfeit polls are believed to have been circulated between August and September across various media platforms in Taiwan.

A Case Tangled with Bribes
Further complicating matters, Hsu has also been linked to a case involving an organized trip to Hunan, China. This trip is alleged to have been a bribe intended to secure votes for a particular presidential candidate. This incident follows closely on the heels of the detention of an online media reporter for disseminating fake polls, allegedly under the direction of Chinese officials.
