If attention was what they were seeking, attention was what they got.

While many are close enough to their parents to give them the occasional peck on the cheek, we’re sure a good number of people draw the line when it comes to kissing a parent on the lips.

Especially as a grown adult.

It wasn’t the case for Taiwanese celeb Lotus Wang Cai Hua (王彩桦), 55, and her 20-year-old daughter, Huang Yuting.

The pair recently filmed Chinese New Year’s Eve variety show WEARE 我们的除夕夜, where they performed together on stage.

As their performance came to an end, Cai Hua moved towards Yuting for a kiss on the lips… a kiss that lasted “around 20 seconds”, according to reports.

Cai Hua later reenacted the kiss during the talking portion of the show, despite her daughter’s visible reluctance to do so.

Not what we were expecting when it comes to mother-daughter bonding

Yuting didn’t exactly look comfortable when she was asked to reenact the kiss

If attention was what they were seeking, they definitely got it.

Stills from the performance have gone viral online, with many netizens balking at the mother-daughter smooch.

“I don’t see a problem with kissing one’s child on the cheek, but she’s kissing her on the lips in the same way a couple would. Her daughter didn’t look super on board with and I felt awkward looking at it,” wrote one netizen.

Another said: “It’s okay if they are sisters, but they’re mother and daughter. I don’t understand why they did that. I’m shocked.”

Others also felt Cai Hua should have respected her daughter’s boundaries, and that she had gone “overboard”.

Cai Hua would later reveal in an interview that the kiss was her idea.

According to Cai Hua, her daughter would always kiss and hug her when she was younger, but she stopped when she got older. So she now appreciates the time she gets to spend with Yuting even more.

We wonder if Yuting sees the gesture the same way?
