Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) A group of Swedish parliamentarians are currently visiting Taiwan on a seven-day trip during which they will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and other senior officials, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Monday.
During these meetings, discussions will be made on issues of mutual interests, the latest situation in the region, as well as economic and trade development, MOFA said in a statement.
The six-member delegation led by Mathias Tegnér, vice president of the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Association, arrived in Taiwan on Saturday and will also meet with National Security Council Secretary-General Wellington Koo (顧立雄), Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮).
Before concluding their trip on Friday, the delegates are expected to also pay a visit to the National Development Council, Ministry of Digital Affairs and Ministry of Health and Welfare, MOFA said.
Other members of the cross-parties delegation include parliamentarians Joar Forssell, Johan Hultberg, Åsa Eriksson, Eva Lindh and Stefan Olsson, the ministry added.
The visit marks the second Swedish parliamentarian delegation to visit Taiwan this year, since a four-member group of parliamentarians led by lawmaker Markus Wiechel visited the country from May 14-19.
MOFA described the delegation’s latest visit as further example of warming ties between Sweden and Taiwan, noting that Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has expressed concern over China’s military threat to Taiwan in his first parliamentary address in October 2022.
Swedish parliamentarians also proposed over 20 motions and initiatives to show support toward Taiwan in 2022, according to MOFA.
