Katsuji Nakazawa is a Tokyo-based senior staff and editorial writer at Nikkei. He spent seven years in China as a correspondent and later as China bureau chief. He was the 2014 recipient of the Vaughn-Ueda International Journalist prize.
Global media outlets used terms like “punishment drills” and “punishment war games” to describe China’s military exercises around Taiwan on May 23-24, echoing Chinese state news agency Xinhua’s line: “The drills also serve as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces.”
