President Joe Biden telegraphed how weak he would be on China during his presidential campaign. Unfortunately for the country, that has been one of the few campaign promises he has kept during his time in office.
In an interview with CNN, Biden said that Chinese dictator Xi Jinping is not “looking for war, conflict, expansion of territory,” despite the fact that China has been threatening to invade and conquer Taiwan for years and has repeatedly asserted territorial claims to both land and sea that it has no right to. He also placed the blame for climate change solely on the shoulders of the U.S. and our European allies, absolving China of all responsibility for its pollution and emissions.

On top of that, Biden said, “I think there are positive answers to the dilemmas that exist without worrying about whether or not China is going to rule the world.” How reassuring that is from the man who claims that China is not trying to expand its territory when the country has clearly been doing so for years.
Other than the questions about Biden’s extensive financial ties to China, the big reason Biden has been so soft on China is “climate change.” This is the issue that members of his administration have said the U.S. should ignore China’s human rights in order to reach climate deals. Never mind that China has emitted more carbon than the U.S. since 2006 and that those emissions continue to skyrocket. Or that China has no interest in reducing its emissions at all.
As a result, Biden has promised to put billions of dollars into United Nations climate programs that China can directly receive as a “developing nation.” He has also refused to even attempt to hold China to account for the COVID-19 pandemic, rejoining the same World Health Organization that helped China spread propaganda about the virus and its origins. He eased up on the responsibility of universities to disclose ties to Chinese propaganda programs. Biden sees China just as a friendly competitor, not the genocidal, expansionist regime that it is.

In fact, Biden’s weakness with China can be directly contrasted with the venom he directs toward Americans. When China hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics as it was carrying out a genocide of Uyghur Muslims, Biden’s administration refused to call on sponsors to pull out of the event. When Georgia modified its election laws to make voting easier and more secure, he demanded corporations boycott the state.
Biden refuses to take the threat of China seriously, instead meekly consenting to global climate demands in hopes that China will decide out of the goodness of their heart to do the same. His entire strategy when it comes to China is concessions and capitulation, all while the Chinese Communist Party seeks to conquer its neighbors and spit in the face of Biden’s cherished climate goals.
