China Drops Plans of a “Peaceful Reunification” with Taiwan

China has announced a 7.2% increase in its defence spending for the year. Notably, Beijing’s defence expenditures have doubled during President Xi Jinping’s 11-year-tenure. This comes as Beijing plans to adopt a “firmer” approach towards Taiwan, altering its previous approach of a “peaceful” reunification with the Island. This has triggered international concerns.
