Coupang announced that it held a ceremony in honor of the opening of its second fulfillment center in Taiwan in Taipei City, Taiwan on Nov. 2.

The new fulfillment center is located in Taoyuan City in the northwestern region of Taiwan. It is a large-scale logistics center based on smart logistics that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technology to predict and analyze customer demand and various automation technologies. Following the opening of this second fulfillment center, Coupang plans to open a third in the first half of next year.

Kim Bum-seok, chairman of Coupang Inc., emphasized that Coupang became the first unicorn company in Korea and sparked an investment boom in Korean startups, leading to the birth of numerous unicorn companies, and that he will begin the same innovation in Taiwan too. A unicorn company has an enterprise value over 1 trillion won.

“Coupang’s investment in Taiwan is a clear indication that overseas companies view Taiwan’s market and consumer power positively,” said Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua. “Taiwan will strengthen economic and trade exchanges with the United States and Korea.”

“The Taiwanese government is working with e-commerce companies to create a better environment for the development of e-commerce,” said Li Hui-ren, vice minister of digital affairs of Taiwan. “We will continue to cooperate and exchange with Coupang to drive the growth of the digital economy.”

Meanwhile, the opening of additional large-scale fulfillment centers in Taiwan is expected to boost the growth of Korean SMEs that have entered the Taiwan market through Coupang.
