European Parliament delegation to visit Taiwan in late July – Focus Taiwan Feedzy

 

Taipei, July 18  (CNA) A delegation from the European Parliament will visit Taiwan in late July and meet with top government officials, including President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday in a press release.

According to the release, the visit to Taiwan from July 25-27 by the 15-member delegation will be led by a vice chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and include eight other parliamentarians from different parties.

However, MOFA declined to provide further information on the members of the delegation.

The delegation is scheduled to meet with Tsai, Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), who is also the Democratic Progressive Party’s candidate in the 2024 presidential election, and Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang (唐鳳) to discuss bilateral cooperation on foreign affairs and Indo-Pacific issues, the release said.

The group will also attend banquets hosted separately by Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), according to the release.

Meanwhile, the AFET said in a separate press release that the delegation’s planned Taiwan trip will be part of a larger visit to Asia that also includes a stop in Japan.

The delegation will seek to strengthen cooperation with like-minded partners by discussing geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific and the South China Sea regions with representatives from Japan and Taiwan, according to the release.

MOFA added in its release that Taiwan looks forward to working with the European Union to raise awareness of the importance of a peaceful and stable Taiwan Strait in Europe.
