Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (李克強) has passed away on Friday at the age of 68. According to a report by China’s state-run media CCTV, Li suffered a sudden heart attack on Thursday and died after all efforts to resuscitate him failed.
Under Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平), Li served as premier from 2013 until his retirement in March 2023. The Peking University-educated economist was once seen as a future Communist Party leader but was sidelined by Xi in recent years. Li made a surprising public statement in 2020, saying that more than 600 million people in China earn only RMB 1,000 (US$137) per month, triggering a debate on poverty and income inequality.
The Mainland Affairs Council expresses condolences to Li’s family and says it will continue to pay close attention to any new developments in China.
