Is Marry My Dead Body’s Gingle Wang the next Taiwanese ‘It’ girl in Asia? – Style Feedzy

Is Marry My Dead Body’s Gingle Wang the next ‘It’ girl in Asia? Sought after by luxury brands from Dior to Chaumet, the Taiwanese actress is even being compared to Zhou Xun

Every decade or so, Chinese cinema sees a new flush of actresses that transcends genre and medium and go on to become the “It” girls of their generation.

The early 2000s saw Zhou Xun dominate the silver screen, while the 2010s gave rise to Zhou Dong-yu. These actresses are loved for their range and stand out with their unconventional beauty.

While cinemas and television propelled these actresses to stardom in the 1990s and early 2000s, streaming platforms like Netflix and China’s Douban are where the new generation is finding success and a broader, more international audience.

Among the fresh faces capitalising on these global platforms is Gingle Wang, the breakout female lead in Netflix’s chart-topping Taiwanese film Marry My Dead Body.

Wang is said to be following in the trajectory of the two Zhous and was even dubbed to be a “Zhou Xun successor”, per Cosmopolitan, thanks to her ability to portray a whole range of roles.

From the playful sidekick police officer Lin Tzu-ching in supernatural comedy Marry My Dead Body to a young campaigner fighting workplace sexual harassment in political drama Wave Makers, she has proven that she can do both comedic and dramatic roles with equal flair.

Her works, including films The Outsiders (2018) and Till We Meet Again (2021), have also found their way to other global streaming platforms like Apple TV and Disney+.

She debuted in All Because of Love in 2017 and has since starred in a dozen other productions, including the 2019 film Detention, which earned her best actress nomination at the Golden Horse Awards, the Taiwanese equivalent of the Oscars.

Before her foray into acting, Wang studied in the United States, where she penned two romance novels, the first at the age of 15 under the online pseudonym Jun Jun.

The 25-year-old’s on-screen success and girlie appeal mean her fashion choices have been put under the spotlight. Her fashion personas, from feminine to sporty, may not always see her dressed in bold designer pieces, instead, her often down-to-earth choices lend her an air of relatability among young fans. In particular, Wang favours the “intellectual hippie” look that resonates strongly with Taiwanese youth culture.

Her ability to traverse between girlie, sporty and schoolgirl styles gives her that chameleonic appeal that is highly sought after in the fashion world. And despite her often relatable style, luxury fashion and jewellery brands such as Dior, Tory Burch and Chaumet have caught on to her clout and are already inviting her to their A-list events and using her for campaigns.

If the impact of streaming platforms like Netflix and Apple TV is any indication, Taiwanese productions could have their moment in the sun, much like how South Korean and Thai shows have found success worldwide.

With Wang’s artistic capabilities and her multilingual background, the success of Marry My Dead Body might be just the breakthrough role that will catapult her to global success.
