TAIPEI — Nauru, a tiny Micronesian island nation, on Monday severed ties with Taiwan, switching its political allegiance to China.
The move came two days after Lai Ching-te of the ruling China-skeptic Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won Taiwan’s presidential election, and leaves Taipei with just 12 formal diplomatic allies.
