President calls for more diverse, heart-touching Taiwanese TV dramas – Focus Taiwan Feedzy

Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) expressed on Saturday her gratitude to film and television workers in Taiwan, acknowledging the impact of their work on people’s lives and called for more diverse and heart-touching programs.

Tsai wrote the message on a social media post following the conclusion of the 58th Golden Bell Awards, known as Taiwan’s Emmys, Saturday night.

She congratulated all those who won awards at the star-studded event while thanking those in the broadcasting and TV business for their “companionship” that she said helped the audience navigate the myriad emotions of joy, anger, sorrow and happiness.

“In Taiwan there are many enthusiastic film and TV workers,” Tsai wrote.

She praised their consistent efforts to produce high-quality and diverse content, including entertaining variety programs, trendsetting reality shows and dramas that touched on many issues.

The president cited the award-winning TV series, “Wave Makers” (人選之人-造浪者) as an example. She said the series allow people to better understand how the democratic system works in Taiwan by depicting the daily lives of political figures.

Mentioning “Wave Makers” producer Lin Yu-ling’s (林昱伶) acceptance speech for best miniseries in Saturday’s award ceremony, Tsai said that dramas “remind us that we need to cherish Taiwan’s freedom, democracy and diversity.”

In her speech, Lin said: “I hope that this show will serve as a reminder of how precious Taiwan’s freedom, democracy and diversity are and how it is leading the way in gender issues across Asia.”

“Wave Makers” is a fictional work that depicts the hectic and high-stress work of aides to politicians campaigning for public office in Taiwan and depicts the crises they must defuse and the tough decisions they have to make.

President Tsai said she believes Taiwan’s freedom fosters the creation of diverse content and its diversity allows its people to “become what they want to be.”

At the end of the post, Tsai expressed her hope that Taiwan’s fertile soil for democracy and freedom can continue to inspire film and TV professionals to create more “diverse and heart-touching” programs.

The latest edition of the Golden Bell Awards, the top honor for television programs in Taiwan, was held as a two-night event in Taipei, with non-drama programs featured Friday and dramas showcased Saturday.
