NEW DELHI: India andTaiwansigned an agreement on Friday to bringIndian migrant workersto the island in an effort to address thelabor shortagein Taipei.Taiwan, known for itssemiconductor production, has an aging population and currently relies on migrant workers from Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. These workers are primarily employed in manufacturing or as caregivers for the elderly. The ministry of Labour in Taiwan said that the memorandum of understanding was signed between the de facto embassies in Taipei and Delhi, but the specific details of implementation still need to be worked out.The ministry acknowledged the demand for workers in Taiwan’s manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and other industries has been consistently increasing, and the country is unable to meet this demand on its own.”The quality of Indian labour is stable, they are hard working and well considered,” the ministry said.According to the Taiwan’s labour ministry, a small-scale pilot program will be launched initially, and if successful, more Indian workers will be allowed to enter Taiwan. However, the exact number of workers is yet to be determined.Taiwan has denied previous reports suggesting that up to 100,000 Indian workers would be allowed in.Although India does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, there is a strong business relationship, with India actively encouraging Taiwanese tech companies to invest and manufacture in India. This move is also influenced by India’s strained relationship with China, particularly regarding their disputed border.(with input from agency)
