FAA Boeing audit condemns 737 MAX quality control

STORY: More work lies ahead for Boeing to get back on course. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that it had found numerous issues with production at Boeing and supplier Spirit AeroSystems. Its audit found multiple instances where the companies failed to comply with manufacturing quality control requirements. The FAA also said it found “non-compliance issues in Boeing’s manufacturing process control, parts handling and storage, and product control.” The FAA has not detailed the corrective actions Boeing and Spirit must take, but sent a summary of its findings to the companies in its completed audit. Spirit AeroSystems, which makes the fuselage for the MAX, said it is “in communication with Boeing and the FAA on appropriate corrective actions.”Boeing said that with the audit findings they now had a “clear picture of what needs to be done.” The FAA’s audit was prompted by January’s midair blowout on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. Regulators later barred the planemaker from increasing production of the aircraft. Last week, following a meeting with Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun, FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said Boeing must develop a comprehensive plan to address “systemic quality-control issues” within 90 days. Whitaker said the plan must incorporate results of the audit and findings from an expert review panel report released last week.

Exclusive-Indian firms look to bet big on coal-fired power after long absence

Private Indian firms have expressed interest in building at least 10 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired power capacity over a decade, four sources familiar with the matter said, ending a six-year drought in significant private involvement in the sector. Adani Power, JSW Group and Essar Power are among the companies that have told India’s power ministry they would be keen to expand old plants or develop stalled projects facing financial stress, according to the sources and a government presentation seen by Reuters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, which has cited energy security concerns and low per-capita emissions to defend India’s coal dependence, has been trying to attract private investment to boost its coal-fired capacity by 80 GW by 2032.

India sees $4.95 billion investment for natural gas network in Kashmir, northeast

India expects investment of about 410 billion rupees ($4.95 billion) from companies to build natural gas pipeline infrastructure in its northeastern states and northern federal territories of Kashmir and Ladakh, a minister said on Monday. India, one of the world’s biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, is seeking to boost the use of cleaner fuel to cut its carbon emissions and has set a 2070 goal for net zero carbon emissions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is targeting raising the share of natural gas in India’s energy mix to 15% by 2030 from the current 6.2%.

Rio Tinto CEO bullish on lithium but not eyeing big acquisitions

Demand for key-battery mineral lithium will continue to grow, underpinned by strong adoption of electric vehicles but the price of the metal is expected to be volatile, Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm said on Sunday. Still, Stausholm said Rio will steer clear of making any big ticket acquisitions to grow its lithium business and instead look at ways to improve the lithium extraction technology. Rio Tinto, the world’s biggest iron ore producer, is one of the few large mining companies betting on lithium even as counterparts such as BHP stay away from investing in the metal, which is used in developing EV batteries.
