Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang (唐鳳) on Friday announced the release of Wi-Fi 6E spectrum in Taiwan to facilitate more efficient internet connections and use of the newest generation of wireless devices.
The spectrum, which works with frequency bands from 5.945 GHz to 6.425 GHz, will enable faster speeds, lower latency and higher capacity for Wi-Fi use that does not require a license, Tang said at a media gathering that marked the one-year anniversary of the ministry.
Unlike existing bands ranging from 2.4-5 GHz, which channels in Taiwan are currently crammed into, Wi-Fi 6E improves user experiences for not only home computers but also immersive technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality, Tang said.
She noted that Wi-Fi 6E could also allow the transmission of datasets that are 2-3 times larger to make work from home and virtual conferences easier, for instance.
The introduction of Wi-Fi 6E is in line with operational standards in countries such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan and the European Union, Tang said.
Taiwan’s National Communications Commission will start taking applications from telecommunication companies to operate Wi-Fi 6E devices after it completes regulations for their use, according to Tang.
Meanwhile, Tang said the central government plans to introduce number “111” as an exclusive platform in late September where members of the public get messages from public agencies.
The designated number could help avoid confusion and reduce the chance of people being scammed, she said.
