Taiwan, Slovak charities partner to help Ukraine – Focus Taiwan Feedzy

Taipei, Aug. 1 (CNA) Taiwan’s government on Tuesday pledged US$5 million to help two Slovak charities carry out a reconstruction project in Ukraine amid the 18 month-long Russian invasion, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The donation will go to the Open Society Foundation and Pontis Foundation to first rebuild medical and education facilities in Chernihiv, a northern Ukraine city severely damaged during the early stage of the war, MOFA said in a statement.

At a cooperation agreement signing ceremony held at the Slovak prime minister’s office, Taiwan’s representative to Slovakia David Lee (李南陽) called the central European country a “like-minded” partner of Taiwan, thanking it for working together to curb the spread of authoritarianism worldwide.

Elena Kohútiková, chairwoman of the Slovak Prime Minister’s Council of Advisors, added at the ceremony that Taiwan is the first foreign government to work together with Slovakia to help Ukraine this year.

Taiwan and Slovakia have worked closely since the war began to provide Ukraine with US$2.1 million in humanitarian relief and 350 tons of supplies, MOFA said, adding that it will also introduce Taiwanese businesspeople to the recovery project when the time is right.
