This island’s vibrant exercise in democracy culminated in a rock concert atmosphere at the headquarters of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party on Saturday night, where thousands of supporters thronged to welcome their new president and vice president, Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-Khim.
Making my way through the crowd chanting “Hello President,” I met 30-year-old Enya and her mother Jessica, who had waited hours to see them. “Democracy won tonight,” Jessica shouted out to me, over the deafening music, waving a DPP flag. “My daughter travelled all the way back from Europe to vote so they could win. I’m so happy!”
