Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA) Mayor of Bucha in Northern Ukraine Anatolii Fedoruk has arrived in Taiwan with a delegation on a four-day visit, with the aim of attracting investment in construction projects planned by the city, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Saturday.
The delegation is looking to attract investment in a planned project to construct a science park in the city, which is about 30 kilometers northwestern of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, MOFA said in a press release.
Bucha has been working tirelessly to seek support from democratic nations in an effort to recover from heavy shelling by the Russian military, the release said.
After Moscow launched an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian forces occupied Bucha for nearly a month resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, according to international media reports.
Fedoruk’s visit marked the first time a Ukrainian local government leader has traveled to Taiwan since the outbreak of the war, the release added.
During the delegation’s four days in Taiwan from Nov. 25-28, it will visit Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute, Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), and the Taipei Computer Association.
The release noted that Taiwan’s government has worked closely with the Bucha city government in recent years.
In particular, Taiwan donated US$600,000 to the city for the construction of an air raid shelter and a children’s school in August, according to the release.
The country also helped Bucha renovate 11 shelters, one kindergarten and nine houses in April 2022, benefiting more than 1,000 Ukrainian households, MOFA said in August.
