Visiting Swedish lawmaker eyes more exchanges with Taiwan – Focus Taiwan Feedzy

Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) Visiting Swedish parliamentarian Mathias Tegn?r said he looked forward to seeing more exchanges between Taiwan and Sweden in the areas of trade and technology, during a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen (???) in Taipei Wednesday.

Taiwan and Sweden will “benefit from deeper cooperation and increased trade,” Tegn?r, vice chair of the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Association, said while meeting with Tsai at the Presidential Office.

He called for more exchanges between Taiwan and Sweden in the areas of green technology and energy transition, saying both sides had “a lot to learn from each other,” while noting the opening of direct flights between Taipei and Stockholm “would further increase interactions between us.”

According to Tegn?r, there is an interest within the Swedish parliament in developing better relations with Taiwan, not in response to concerns over other countries but due to the fact that both sides share common values, such as democracy, freedom and the rule-based order.

Tsai expressed similar views, saying she looked forward to seeing the partnership between Taiwan and Sweden deepened, especially in tackling climate change and promoting supply chain security.

She went on to urge both sides to “unite and work together to further empower our democratic alliance” and to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Tegn?r arrived in Taiwan last Saturday with a cross-party delegation for a seven-day visit.

The group also includes parliamentarians Joar Forssell, Johan Hultberg, ?sa Eriksson, Eva Lindh and Stefan Olsson, according to Taiwan’s foreign ministry.

The group’s current trip marked the second Swedish parliamentarian delegation to visit Taiwan this year, after a four-member group of parliamentarians led by lawmaker Markus Wiechel visited the country from May 14-19.

The group will depart from Taiwan on Friday.
