TAIPEI/WASHINGTON — China’s top leadership led by President Xi Jinping is watching Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election with trepidation as it weighs how its results could impact his ambition of unification.
On Dec. 7, around 300 executives from 152 Taiwanese-owned companies operating on the mainland gathered for a meeting in Beijing. The event was hosted by Chinese official Song Tao, who is in charge of Taiwan affairs and is a close ally of Xi.
